Recently, KLC School of Design ran an Alumni competition with Greenfingers, to design an area dedicated solely for teenagers at a new children's hospice.
We are incredibly pleased to share that we have been announced as the winner of the inaugural KLC and Greenfingers alumni competition, with the Halcyon Daze teenage garden concept - inspired by summer music festivals and winter lodges, it's a space for experiences, creating memories, making the most of each day, from endless summer days, to cosy autumnal evenings, it’s for sharing the things that young people love to do, or for just taking some time out on your own.
The garden is encircled by an earthworks hedge, standing stones and trees, creating exclusivity and a place to escape to, a place to hang out. Within, hard-surfaced paths link up the various spaces, making it simple to access all areas. The planting is relaxed, with areas of meadow style planting and grassed areas to lie back and cloud watch from, whilst tall-grasses create veiled journeys and Glastonbury-style festival flags catch on the lightest breeze, taking you to another place.
The earthworks contours and a sloping site creates an amphitheatre to the front of the garden, surrounding the super shed!
The super shed is a multi-functional feature, with super luxe styling inside, it is a hang out space, it’s a music room; for listening, mixing or playing, and it includes adaptable and bespoke furniture for dining. In the summer the bi-folding doors can be opened up completely, and the shed becomes a stage for your own music festival.
A huge pull down screen at the front of the shed creates an outdoor cinema for those warm evenings and can be watched from salvaged retro ‘car’ seats, just like at old drive-in movies.
The garden is lit in the evening informally with strings of lights, a ramp leads round to the lower-level ‘Backstage’ area, which utilises space to the rear, a glade with a stunning woodland ravine backdrop. Here there are hammocks and swings to chill out on, space for barbeques and a dining area to share your feast, adaptable booths are a feature ideal for dj-ing or a pop-up dress-up photo booth or whatever takes your fancy to create your own festival, and there is ample space for dancing.
Beyond is a camping area, making for an authentic festival experience, where you can sit up till late chatting around the fire.
