About

Rachel Parker Soden Studio Shot. Dark haired white woman with glasses looking at camera in front of brightly coloured painting on an easel

“Those often fleeting moments, seemingly simple pleasures, which tantalise the brain’s pleasure centres, like when I am surrounded by the landscape, humbled and the head full of ‘stuff’ is diminished by the scale, bearing witness to the spectacular beauty that the light from the universe beyond, filtered through our atmosphere, creates and reveals; that feeling, those experiences, that’s what inspires me to paint.”

Rachel Parker Soden

I am an abstract expressionist artist, living and working in the beautiful West Sussex South Downs, in the south of England.

Nestled in this beautifully scrunched up part of the Earth’s crust, we live and adventure with our awesome two home educated children.

Colour, light, texture and mark making are my language. Painting is my way of processing and communicating. It allows me to create, to play, to explore and to ignite the senses, by mixing, placing, and layering, colour and contrast.   Untangling and refining, looking for a point that straddles chaos and order to create drama and a composition that balances yet intrigues.

My paintings are created by allowing my inner emotions and instinct to combine with my experiences and memories of the world, calling on contrasts and sensations of nature and the natural and built landscape around us.

“I mostly work in water-based media, including acrylics, inks, spray paints, markers, pencil and pastel.  I work in a very intuitive way, and I love the immediacy these materials bring, they allow me build layers of interest and to take risks.”
